The Hamiltonian
The Heritage collection on Level 3 of Central Library includes a number of Yearbooks from the various secondary schools in Hamilton. Our oldest yearbooks are The Hamiltonian – the magazine of the Hamilton High School. The Hamilton High School opened in 1910 and operated as a co-educational secondary school until 1955 when it separated into Hamilton Boys High School and Hamilton Girls High School. Hamilton City Libraries holds issues of the The Hamiltonian from 1915.
The information contained includes notes on books presented to the school library, sporting notes including results, examination results, school concerts etc. They also included information on former students so we see Birth and Marriage notices, Obituaries, University degrees attained and notes on what former students are doing. Issues during World War II included lists of former students serving overseas, including those that were killed or wounded on active service well as well as brief biographies of some who were killed. If you have a family member who attended Hamilton High School it may well be worth having a look at these.
