He Paataka Kaakano Seed library is located at the entrance of
St Andrews Library.

The Seed library was set up using repurposed materials. An old card catalogue is used to house the seeds, and the seed packets and containers are made using discontinued books from the collection.

How does it work?

Seeds are FREE for the community—take what you need and give what you can.

  1. Write down the seeds you’re taking – personal details are optional. This information is used to contact you about workshops we run.
  2. Plant your seeds and let some of your plants go to seed.
  3. Collect your seeds and return some to the Waiwherowhero St Andrews Library.
  4. Repeat!

We accept seed packet donations as well as seeds grown from home.

The purpose of this collection is to:

  • Practice sustainable and self-sufficient living
  • Try gardening at a lower cost
  • Encourage greater biodiversity in the community
  • Provide a habitat and food for animals and insects
