Bridge & Anglesea Streets roundabout

HCL 03516

This photograph captures a moment in time when the Bridge and Anglesea Street roundabout was a simple t-intersection. This was before the opening of Cobham Drive changed the layout of the city.

The photographer is standing on the lawn in front of the Hamilton Courthouse, looking nearly south. To the left is Bridge Street (now Anzac Parade), running toward the river, while Anglesea Street crosses the scene from the upper left to the far right. On the far side of the roundabout, you can just see the beginning of Cobham Drive - built only after three or four houses were removed from Anglesea Street to make way for it.

The lengthening shadows suggest the photo was taken around 4:00pm in mid- to late spring and judging by the traffic, this might just have been rush hour. Photographs like this bring Hamilton’s streetscapes, and memories vividly back to life. If you have similar images or stories, we’d love to hear from you.
