Tales of Confidence and Wagging Tails
Reading Buddies at the Library
Reading Buddies at Hamilton City Libraries brings books and dogs together in the most heartwarming way. Children who are emerging readers or a little unsure around dogs got the chance to read to our friendly therapy dogs Greta, Roxy, Toby, and Ernie.
The transformation has been amazing. Some children started the programme barely speaking and curling up in their chairs to stay away from the dogs. By the end, they were confidently reading aloud and even giving the dogs hugs before getting started. Moments like these remind us why Reading Buddies exists – to build literacy, confidence, and a love of reading.
Sessions run during term time at a local primary school, and in the school holidays we host them at Te Kete Aronui Library. In January 2026, we will have two holiday sessions, giving more children the chance to meet our four-legged friends and improve their reading skills. Parents and caregivers consistently give positive feedback, celebrating the progress their children make both in reading and in confidence around dogs. The programme supports children with print disabilities, dyslexia, or other reading challenges, as well as children learning English or Te Reo Maaori.
From shy beginnings to proud, smiling readers, this year’s Reading Buddies programme has been a huge success. We can’t wait to see even more little readers and wagging tails in the new year.
