Exploring with ScratchMaths

This 12-week course aims to introduce young learners to the fundamentals of computing and programming, help them understand how programs work, and encourage creativity. The course seeks to enhance students' understanding of mathematics through coding and foster their digital literacy, teamwork, and confidence in problem-solving.

This course draws inspiration from the freely available ScratchMaths curriculum developed by UCL Knowledge Lab.

Target audience

The course is designed for students in Year 5 to Year 7.

Learning outcomes

1. Develop foundational programming skills and understanding of how coding works.

2. Express creativity through coding projects.

3. Build digital literacy.

4. Strengthen mathematical understanding through coding.

5. Develop teamwork skills and confidence in tackling challenges.

Please note:

Participants must bring their own laptops (Windows 10 or later preferred)

Is any prior knowledge/education required to enrol in the course?

This course is best suited for students who enjoy thinking, are willing to take on challenges, and have a solid grasp of two-digit multiplication and division. Such learners are more likely to experience a sense of creativity and achievement throughout the course. Parents of children who may not yet meet these expectations are encouraged to consider carefully whether the course is a good fit, as it may otherwise be less enjoyable.

The programme mentors are experienced youth leaders from YVIA (Youth Volunteer Innovation Academy), trained through a specialised instructional program led by the Library. Leveraging YVIA’s decade-long experience in global innovation ecosystems, they utilise a unique peer-led mentorship model to spark students' curiosity about technology and cultivate essential digital problem-solving skills through cutting-edge open STEM courses.

Please note children under 14 must always be accompanied by a caregiver in our libraries.
