What are archives?

Archives are collections of original records preserved because of their long‑term value. These may include letters, reports, minutes, registers, maps, photographs, films, and plans.

Hamilton City Libraries’ Archives include records from Hamilton City Council and material donated or loaned by the local community, offering rich insight into Hamilton and Waikato’s past.

Our archives collections

Our archives are a valuable resource for:

  • Research into Hamilton and Waikato history

  • Local genealogy and family history
  • Assignments requiring original or primary sources

  • Topics enhanced by local case studies

Hamilton City Council Archive

This archive includes records from the current council and earlier local authorities, such as Frankton Borough Council.

Collection items include:

  • Minute and rates book

  • Correspondence files
  • Plans and aerial photographs

Community Archives

The community archive holds material from local clubs, organisations, businesses, and individuals, including:
  • Records of the Hamilton Club

  • An Armed Constabulary diary from the 1870s
  • Letters from early Waikato settler William Rysdale

You can search archival records through the library catalogue.

Archives are accessed by appointment in the Special Collections Room on Level 3 of the Central Library

Please note:

  • Identifying relevant material may take staff time

  • Some items are fragile and may not be available for viewing. 

Library staff are happy to advise on access and help you plan your research.
