Winter shows as they used to be
HCL_04394, Hamilton City Libraries
The Winter Show circa 1920. Note the flags of different nations. We have no idea the rationale for flags as there appears to be nothing in particular in this view from overseas. On the left is a great white pile of small cartons. These are Whittome, Stevenson & Co jellies. The company advertised in the Waikato Argus advising ‘you do not need a clothes prop – our jellies stand up by themselves.’ The trick was that Whittomes used genuine gelatin whereas (according to Whittomes adverts) other manufacturers perhaps used glue. Whittomes, Stevenson and Co also advertised wishing to buy large quantities of mushrooms for their celebrated Worcestershire Sauce. Further down the column: ‘Small boys, opportunity has arrived. Gather all the mushrooms you can. Whittome, Stevenson & Co. will buy them.’ But still no address. To the right of centre Grey & Menzies display their Dry Ginger Ale and, on the right, Sutton Seeds – Sold only by authorised agents. The winter shows of yesteryear were busy business shows.
