Do you know the girls in this photo?
There seems always to be something in the news about netball – the Silver Ferns, England (what are they called?), the Australian team playing all around the world or maybe just a bit about the ‘upcoming season’. The thing is, I saw something recently about netball, maybe the coaches… At any rate, it made me think, ‘Didn’t this game used to be called basketball?’ and sure enough here it is. These young ladies of the Tamahere Model School are the ‘A team’ of 1969. They are dressed as per the standard girls’ attire for basketball since before World War II and maybe much much earlier.
There are seven girls here and one coach. They were probably only about twelve in this photo. We've received a full list of the names and a little information about the prowess of this team. The girl holding the ball is Debbie Otto now renowned high-performance coach Debbie Strange.
