Trying it on Scout fundraiser
110 years ago this week, a grand concert was held at the Frankton Town Hall to aid the Boy Scouts’ Hall Building Fund. The Frankton Town Band performed before the concert, along with a selection of local performers. A dance was held after the programme.
Prior to the construction of the hall, the Frankton troop met in the Church of England Mission Hall, Somerset Street. According to newspaper reports at the time, the troop had been formed in 1909, and they had been raising funds for 3 years. Their specialist hall on Massey Street was built on land leased from the Defence Department and included “…a spacious drill hall, a fine stage and two ante-rooms. One of the last-names will form a library.”
The hall was opened on 12 June 1914 by J. A. Young MP and His Worship the Mayor.
