Festive display lights up

Camera Obscura,
This is H & J Court Ltd Victoria Street shop front for Christmas 1962. This photo must have been taken after nine o’clock else it wouldn’t have been dark enough to produce this effect. All you see above the canopy was manufactured in-house by John Miller and his team of artisans. This was the style of Christmas displays in department stores and most had a Santa’s cave or grotto where an ‘actual’ Santa sat to take orders from the children. The window displays were usually jampacked with toys for children and John usually had a theme from children’s stories for each window. Almost every business along Victoria Street would have had festive season displays.
