Show on a grand scale
Last week we featured a piece of ephemera. It was a flyer for a production of Dick Whittington and his cat done in 1926. This is where it was staged. It is the Hamilton Town Hall auditorium, but this image is from c. 1907. It doesn’t look too big – that is agreed. However, the population of Hamilton when it opened was a mere two thousand five hundred (approx.) and consequently, not a large number of ratepayers. It cost a total of $614,000 in today’s money which included $10,500 for the piano. The occasion in this photo is a flower show. Near the centre of the picture, at the end of the centre row of tables, is Dr Brewis. It has been noted before, he seems to have been a member of every club in Hamilton. Officially opened in March 1905, the building was demolished in 1967.
