And the rain came down
Last week featured a rowing regatta programme for 1965. Regattas had been going on in Hamilton since 1904. This is 1907, the year of the big flood. In this scene the river appears high but is not ‘in flood’. At the peak of the 1907 the only part of the boat shed in the centre that was not under water was the wee flagpole at the front of the roof. Otherwise, the entire building was submerged. On this day it is something of a carnival affair – tents, lots of ladies all in white and boaters (hats) galore. It’s actually a big crowd – the population of Hamilton was only about two and a half thousand at the time. One tent displays a sign which says Luncheon Now On and the rowing club flies the blue ensign. A very posh occasion.
