Narrows a course linked to past

HCL 05102tile

There is a sign on the corrugated iron shed on the right which says, ‘The Narrows Golf Club Links Private’. The question is, was The Narrows course a golf links. The difference between a course and a links is essentially how much work was done to lay out the course. One definition is that a golf links is not manufactured. Maybe that was the case at The Narrows.

In this image there are about twenty-five men and maybe three women. That’s an imbalance by todays standards. The shed (clubhouse?) is classic rural ancillary architecture of the day. So long as the rain doesn’t get in, it’ll do. A man and woman stand at a wee table with trophies, so prize-giving is in full swing. What about the chap on the right – striped blazer and Oxford bags? Where’s he from or where’s he been?
