A glimpse of the past

Last week, our camera obscura gave you a glimpse of the past through the Restaurant Vienna a la Carte menu. As can be seen in this image, the Vienna was the northern-most shop in the Bristol Building on Victoria Street which was built in 1925. It occupied the area beneath the set of windows on the right. How far did they go for their meat? There’s (Frank) Goodhall the Quality Butcher on the left. Next is Perrett & Sherlock – ladies outfitters. The canvas cover shades the name of Marriott’s Stores. This photo was taken in about 1937/38.

The building is still there but much modified with panelling covering this façade, all now painted a sort of Greco-Roman orange shade – perhaps it’s terracotta. It is the third building from London Street (on the right). The menu last week gave the street number as 273 but after a wholesale change of street numbers around the commercial streets of Hamilton in the 1960s, businesses at this building are now numbered from about 637 to 643.
