Smoothing the way
New asphalt in Hood Street. It’s always great to have a new surface to drive on – smooth and responsive. Only now the road marking to be done. Two men stand at the end of the street with arms folded watching the operation. One is definitely on the payroll, the other may be a ratepayer watching council works – he is in a hat, tie and cardigan. Right here on the left was a taxi stand in the day – this is the 1960s – and it may still be for taxis. The weatherboard shed on the left edge of the image is the taxi call box. The old post office is ahead on the opposite side of Victoria Street. It can’t have been too close to winter – the chap on the asphalt laying machine is in shorts and ‘roman’ sandals. Not the footwear of industrial work.
