Cambridge Town Hall
Cambridge Town Hall HCL_08941
In the very lower right-hand corner is possibly a sliver of Lake Street. Beyond the trees across the centre is Victoria Street or, was this roundabout in front of Cambridge Town Hall contained? The town hall apron hardly exists in this photo and there was far less traffic in the day. This is a dark image and we don’t know why – deterioration or a dark day?
The building was completed in 1909 and was used, according to the newspapers of the day, for entertainment and meetings. ‘Town Hall Pictures’ were advertised as early as 1916. In the Waikato Independent for Tuesday, 27th August 1912, two very different functions were advertised. That evening there would be a ‘Cyclone of Merriment’ with Miss Marie Baines in London’s latest laughing success, Our Mary Ellen. On the following Sunday evening there would be held, a Great National Memorial Service for the late General Booth, the founder of the Salvation Army, who had passed away the week before. Cambridge Town Hall, a veritable variety showcase.
