No end to roadworks
Is there ever an end to roadworks? Maybe but as the population increases, so does traffic. As traffic increases so does the requirement for better roads. Wider, more direct, and smoother (corners and surface) to aid the efficient flow of traffic on a mission. This is Cambridge Road in 1968. The levels are being dropped to the gulley just south of Hillcrest. The point of this was probably to widen the road but also to make the slope to the gully more gradual. The Borough council did the same to the south end of Victoria Street in 1915.
This particular piece of road is interesting. If you look closely, you may be able to see the top of two cars going down the hill. Only the windows are showing. We don’t know what the current levels and nor do we know if it is still State Highway 1.
