Garage hub prime spot

HCL 01196tile

This is looking a bit south of west along Bryce Street in 1939. Bryce, Barton, Hood & Collingwood Streets were the major motor garage hubs. In this image, taken just beyond Barton Street, we can see three motor garages which were later called service stations perhaps from the late 1950s. Note the sign writing, M.Mac.Donald, and the full stop after Mac is repeated on the front of the building. Beyond is Crabb’s Garage – C Crabb - Motor Engineer. These two businesses share half each of the same building – identical fronts like a terrace house. Next is Brinkworth’s Service Garage. Behind the power lines and behind the buildings is a sign for McDonald’s Ice Cream – the business that featured in the leaflet last week. The factory was in the black-roofed two storey building – an oasis of delight in that street of grease and oil.
