A unique roadshow is touring across Aotearoa New Zealand, featuring a life-size replica of NASA’s Opportunity rover, bringing space exploration closer to home - to Central Library!

This roadshow aims to inspire innovation and showcase how cutting-edge technology is shaping the future of Aotearoa New Zealand.

About the Opportunity Rover Replica

The Centre for Automation and Robotic Engineering Science (CARES) of the University of Auckland in collaboration with New Dexterity research group have created a 3D-printed replica of NASA’s Opportunity Rover for STEM dissemination purposes. The goal is to engage students in hands-on learning and to promote interest in engineering, space exploration, and robotics technologies. The project involved using a 3D model of the rover so as to replicate it with rapid prototyping techniques and off the shelf materials, paying attention to details such as the iconic solar panels, the six-wheeled mobility system, and the robotic arm that is equipped with scientific instruments. Upon completion of the 3D printing process, the parts were assembled so as to resemble the rover as closely as possible, using appropriate fasteners and decorative materials. To increase interactivity of the exhibit, motorized components and computer vision systems have been incorporated into the structure so as to simulate some of the rover’s movements and interact with the visitors in a socially fun manner. The Opportunity replica provides a tangible tool for explaining planetary exploration and engineering design to students of all ages.
