Maunder Family Images

In 2017, Geoff Steven entrusted a collection of glass plate negatives to Hamilton City Libraries. He had first discovered them in 1963, under his family home in Mt Albert. The focus of the images has now been identified as the Maunder Family, who resided at a house called ‘Punawai’, on Tainui Street. The images have been dated to c.1900-1914 and show scenes from around Hamilton, Raglan and family holidays to Raurimu.

The family immigrated to New Zealand in 1867 and Thomas purchased land in the Pukete area. Thomas and his son Arthur were prominent citizens and entrepreneurs, with articles from newspapers of the time outlining their successes in Hamilton.

Thomas became a significant landlord of buildings on Victoria St. His first purchased was a small furniture business previously owned by Mr David Elliott. We have a label from Mr Elliott's business in our collection.

This digital exhibition showcases a selection of images from this collection. A more in depth exhibition is currently on display on Level 3, Central Library. The full collection of images can also be explored on our Heritage Collections Online, and we encourage you to add comments to further the information we have about these images.
