Racing for a good cause

This flier is promoting a fundraising event held on 10 December 1932. Motor cycle races were held at Claudelands Racecourse, the “Best and Only Banked Track in the Dominion”. The event was held to raise funds for the Waikato Children’s Camp League, founded by Dame Hilda Ross, who ran a health camp at Port Waikato. Sick or underprivileged children were transported by boat up the river to attend the camp.  A race noted in the Waikato Times on 7 December before the event was an “old crocks” race, for machines of ancient vintage. This should be very amusing, as there is a good entry of cycles dating back to 1903.” How amazing to think that in 1932, motor cycles from previous decades were already being considered vintage, what would they think of the changes in technology now!
