Label stands test of time

HCLE 00027tile

This label is from D. Elliott, Cabinetmaker, General Upholsterer and Undertaker, who operated in Hamilton from 1880. He won a contract from the Hamilton Borough Council to build a new toll-house to collect tolls from people passing across the Union Bridge. In 1881, it was reported that he had taken over the premises previously held by Vialou & Co, to run a furnishing depot. In 1888 he declared bankruptcy and all his stock was sold to cover his debts. This label is one of our oldest items of Ephemera in our collection.
